Martin Luther King Jr., Campaign 2012 and the American Dream

    by Secretary-Treasurer Lee A. Saunders  |  January 16, 2012

    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking at Mason Temple, Memphis, TN on April 3, 1968.

Each year, the commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a reminder of the remarkable contribution he made to all of us through his courageous defense of civil rights, human dignity and economic justice. Dr. King was a longtime champion of the labor movement, and he died in 1968 while marching with sanitation workers in Memphis, Tenn., all members of AFSCME Local 1733. Those workers were fighting for the recognition of their union, for collective bargaining rights and for the respect that every person is entitled to.

Thank you to everyone that played a part in the presentation and the vote that took place. A lot of work went into this and the Table Officers are sincere when we say that we couldn't have done it without everyone pitching and doing their part. Thanks again!

    In solidarity,
    AFSCME Local 1067

    Pension Reform Act

Governor Duval Patrick signed Pension Reform Legislation indicating it will save Massachusetts $5 billion...

    9 Demands of the 99%

Americans across the country have spoken up. We're sick and tired of a country that only works for the 1%. It's time to bring the corporate agenda to an end, and it starts with these demands—common-sense policies that would restore the balance for the 99%.

What do you think we need to do to make America work for the other 99%? It's up to you to make the ninth demand. It's your opportunity to say what you think will get our country working again.

    President Kevin Hanley offers Congratulations

AFSCME, Local 1067, President, Kevin Hanley wishes Past President of the AFL-CIO, Robert Haynes, best wishes and New President Steven Tolman, best of luck. Congratulation to our own AFSCME Council 93, Jen Springer on her newly elected position of V.P. to the AFL-CIO. Tiger Stockbridge, our watch dog as Sergeant-at-Arms.
