McEntee: “Voters Want a Recovery That Works for Everyone”
AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee on President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address and Our Nation’s Economic Crisis
Washington, DC — Today, AFSCME released a new video highlighting the lessons to be learned from Franklin D.
Roosevelt’s response to the Great Depression. The video, entitled "Make America Happen,”
links FDR’s New Deal with President-elect Barack Obama’s calls for bold action and civic engagement in response to our present crisis.
AFSCME has a unique bond with the brave men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line for our country. More than a third of our members have
served in Iraq or Afghanistan, or have family members who have done so. Likewise, many of our members provide care at veterans’ homes and hospitals
across the country.
Now AFSCME is launching a new initiative to give back to our veterans. AFSCME’s Matching Fund for Veterans program seeks to provide support
for state veteran homes throughout the nation. Click on the link above to read more.
A Short History of AFSCME
The history of AFSCME began in 1932, as the country suffered through a severe economic depression, when a small group of white-collar professional state employees met in Madison, Wisconsin,
and formed what would later become Wisconsin State Employees Union/Council 24. Click here for more.
As AFSCME members we can take online trainings, for free. These trainings sessions are one part of a new initiative called the AFSCME Leadership Academy (ALA). The classes are specially designed for AFSCME staff, officers and members like you! For more information or to register click here.
President Urges Public Patience on Economy

WASHINGTON — President Obama is stepping up efforts to maintain public support for his agenda as rising unemployment presents him with the biggest test of his political strength since taking office. Faced with an economic downturn that has proved deeper than the White House initially projected, Mr. Obama asked Americans on Saturday to remain patient, arguing that his $787 billion stimulus plan had saved the economy from collapse and put it on a gradual course to recovery. “As a result of the swift and aggressive action we took in the first few months of this year, we’ve been able to pull our financial system and our economy back from the brink,” he said, deflecting calls for a new round of stimulus spending and saying that his plan was intended to work not in a few months but over two years.
